THE SEARCHThe University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Dean of the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine. This individual will also serve as Chief Scientific Officer of University of Chicago Medicine. QUALIFICATIONSThe next Dean will have a substantial record of creative accomplishments and meaningful research contributions. The University of Chicago seeks candidates with demonstrated leadership skills and experience leading team efforts or building programs including budgetary and operational oversight of academic units of significant size and complexity. In addition, scientists or physician-scientists with experience in industry, industrial partnerships, or venture creation are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a MD, MD/PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and must qualify for the rank of full professor with tenure at the University of Chicago.The successful candidate will embody many of the following professional qualifications, skills, experiences, and personal qualities:-Strategic vision and an innovative spirit; energetic and forward-thinking;-The skill and predisposition to convene diverse groups, connect researchers from across fields, and lead a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary endeavor;-The spirit to understand collaboration and to join with colleagues at all levels and across multiple boundaries in an effort to spark both creativity and execution;-A commitment to excellence in the education and/or mentoring of students and trainees of diverse backgrounds;-Insight and judgment to identify the most important and tractable biological and biomedical questions, whose solutions will propel the field forward;-Scientific breadth and intellectual curiosity, an appreciation for the range of approaches, methodologies, and disciplines that inform the work of the BSD;-An inclination towards entrepreneurship and commercialization of scientific or clinical discoveries; appreciation of the value of applied research;-A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and open discourse;-A significant and consistent record as a funded investigator, preferably with experience obtaining multidisciplinary, multi-investigator grants; and,-The capacity to join a group of ambitious deans who will work with the President, the EVP, and the Provost to provide academic leadership for the University.
