Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative

Please Note: This is a 12-month Term position from the date of hire (term positions may be extended based on additional funding and other potential factors).
The Research Technologist 2 conducts experimental research lab work and/or assists in design of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). This role will complete mathematical calculations, computer tasks, critically analyze data, trouble shoot assays based on collected data and judge the validity of data. This position follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices. Some routine clerical duties will be required, such as the maintenance of animal and lab supply inventories.
Please Note: Animal work and maintenance of the laboratory animal colony is a requirement of the position. Time in the workspaces will be divided between the animal facility for colony maintenance and the performance of animal experiments and the laboratory of the completion of animal experiments and other primary responsibilities. The employee is to attend and participate in weekly journal clubs, group meetings, lab meetings and be prepared to present at such meetings when requested.
Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
Using a fully functioning level of skill, completes the following activities:
Breeding and screening transgenic mice
Database management of colony
Cell culture, cell isolation
Tissue fixation, staining
DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression, Western blotting
Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Demonstrated laboratory experience; Experience should include animal handling (mice) and colony maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols; Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations; excel
Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;
Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Cell and Molecular Biology classes.
Master’s degree in a biological discipline.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Following overall research objectives, independently designs, plans, conducts and troubleshoots experiments.
Evaluates protocols and data obtained from groups of experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve quality and validity of results based upon overall project objectives.
Familiar with microscopy and the use of software for the collection and analysis of images.
