The Research Technologist 1 conducts tests and procedures; sets up and operates equipment; records observations and measurements and collects and compiles data in a research lab; requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques.
Please Note: The employee will be working in a functional lab around known hazards (chemicals, gas tanks, cryotanks, tissue slicers, lasers, etc). The employee is required to follow all safety procedures as set forth by the lab and the university Research Safety Office. The employee will be working around animals and will be required to euthanize and dissect animals as needed by the experimental design. The employee must be able to operate lab equipment without assistance, although training will be provided for equipment that is unfamiliar.
Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities:
Cell culture, cell isolation
Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
Ex vivo chick embryo development
Intra ocular injections
Records test results and may maintain databases.
Completes standard and routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.
Maintains inventory of reagents, mice and lab supplies
Completes other duties as assigned
HS diploma or equivalent and some basic science courses is required.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Competency following standard protocols.
Competency in basic calculations and conversions (be able to calculate the number of grams of a chemical is needed to make a solution with a specific molarity)
Ability to collect data and organize.
Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy.
Basic understanding of animal model systems and possess the ability to recognize major organs and their placement, particularly the eye/retina and the brain.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
BS/BA in a Biology or a related field.
Experience designing and conducting experimental research with minimal or no supervision.
Experience organizing and reporting research findings to others.
Experience using confocal microscopes.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Experience with cell culture and sterile technique.
Familiarity with cryo-safety ad cryotank handling.
